Warning: These 3 Mistakes Won’t Help You Get More Twitter Followers

Getting More Twitter FollowersDo you want to get more Twitter followers?

Warning: These 3 Mistakes Are Costing You Twitter Followers

Investing time and money into Twitter is one of the best things you can do to drive online traffic for your business. With no filters (yes, I’m referring to Facebook), there is virtually no limit to how large you could grow your community – if done well. However, one big problem many businesses encounter is that they just don’t know what to do with the micro-blogging site. They see it as an opportunity to do some link building for their business and blast out promotions. They just don’t “get it.”

If you’re one of those business owners, it’s okay. We all make mistakes– it’s how we learn. It’s never too late to make changes and take advantage of all the relationship-building, traffic-driving opportunities that Twitter has to offer. Just make sure that moving forward you aren’t making any of these big mistakes.

First: Never engaging.

Too many businesses use Twitter just as a broadcast tool. They don’t actually take the time to engage with their followers or respond to @mentions. Given the reciprocal nature of Twitter, that’s a big problem, as you’ll only get back in return what you give.

While some authority figures can get away with purely informational tweets and very little engagement, the vast majority of us will need to engage with our audiences.

Turn engagement with your Twitter audience into a regular part of your routine, something you log in and do at regular intervals. Or, better yet, if you have a customer service team, turn the task of monitoring Twitter over to them. Check out our blog post about listening on social media to learn how you can do a better job of engaging with fans on Twitter.

Second: Always promoting yourself and not providing value.

If you’re doing nothing but tweeting out sales and other promotions for your business, you’re probably losing Twitter fans fast (assuming you were able to build that audience in the first place).

This is where most businesses go wrong — they focus all of their energy on tweeting out deals and announcements rather than on forming relationships.

Follow the 80/20 rule and make sure that 80% of your content provides value and that only 20% is promotional. Ask yourself what content your audience would be interested in seeing, what they would find valuable or entertaining. It doesn’t have to be directly related to your business, either. It just needs to provide value by educating or entertaining your followers.

Also keep in mind that not all of the Twitter content needs to be your own. Twitter is a great place for curating great content that your audience would want to see. Just make sure that the content provides value and is in line with your business and messaging. Check out how I mix it up daily on my Twitter account.

Third: Treating all social networks the same.

You see this ALL THE TIME, companies who have made auto posting from Facebook their Twitter strategy. Let me tell you something: this is not a strategy.

When you talk to people on Twitter, you’ll find that many are there because they don’t care for Facebook at all.

It’s important to remember that every social network and every audience is a little different. Instead of treating your social networks like they’re interchangeable, remember that they each have their own etiquette and rhythms. Get to know your audience on Twitter, what content they are interested in and how they like it delivered.

As I said in the beginning of this article, we all make mistakes. They allow us to learn and grow. Now that you know some of the biggest mistakes for Twitter, you’ll know what to avoid doing. So now you just have to keep moving. Keep tweeting out valuable content and keep engaging with your audience on Twitter. Start conversations. You never know who you’re going to talk to next and where that conversation may lead.

Have you made any of these mistakes (that you’re willing to admit to)? Are there any other mistakes you see being made that are costing you or others from getting more Twitter followers?

I try to avoid all three of these. Engagement is key to making mutually beneficial connections. Sharing, commenting, replying, all of these are so helpful and wonderful to receive. Social media wouldn’t be any fun if they were all alike!

    • So true Beth. If all someone is doing is liking and not engaging they’re missing out a lot on the benefits of Twitter.

Thanks Sheena, so true points here. And I of course try to avoid all three too. Then engaging and going in to conversations are the fun things on Twitter. Creating connections…

    • That’s awesome Katarina. I agree the engaging part is the fun part 🙂

Jeeps–I do respect Linkedin and work differently in that platform. Plus, I love the Twitter/LinkedIn combo. Facebook is not something I work at too much –and it shows. Thanks for the reminder.

    • Love LinkedIn ourselves Sharon and glad to hear the combo of both Twitter and LinkedIn work well for you. Thanks for visiting.

My twitter has suffered with me engaging lately. I truly forgot how fun it was and how great the conversations can get. My numbers have gone way down too when I haven’t gotten the talking going. Thanks for the reminder. I love this.

    • Thanks 🙂 I know I’ve seen you on Twitter a lot in the past. You’d be great with the Twitter video messages. Great way to engage.

  • Definitely good points here and worth heeding. I am especially not fond of the autoposting of FB to Twitter and vice versa–and I rarely duplicate anything that I post on LinkedIn. It’s very different from the other platforms. I need to boost my Twitter engagement back up, though. I’ve let it slide a bit lately.

    • Agree 100%! Have you tried using the new Twitter video? It’s a great way to engage with folks sending them quick personal videos 🙂

Have to try harder at this. Twitter is certainly not my forte!

    • We love Twitter Rosemary (obviously since that’s the site we help with)….but also it’s really because it such a great way to connect with new people strategically and start great relationships. Hope to see you on Twitter 🙂

Completely agree with you on these, Sheena. And, I’ve been a bit guilty of the engagement part — mainly due to not using/knowing the platform very well. Twitter moves so fast and is so noisy — so I don’t tend to spend as much time interacting there as I used to years ago.

    • It definitely moves fast for sure. To start work off of the notifications and engage with those already interacting with you. After that you can slowly start picking others you’d like to. As I mentioned above, quick video replies go a long way. Thanks for stopping by Cathy.

Ashamed to say…but #1 is definitely what hurts me the most 🙁 I’m working on it though. Thanks for the friendly reminder to engage 🙂

    • It’s really the best part of Twitter and where all the magic happens. I find using downtime (waiting online, on hold, school bus….) the best time to jump on and have some conversations for fun. Thanks for sharing.

Good tips, Sheena! I think Twitter is so wonderful because it breaks down barriers between influencers and average joes. I’ve also received direct sales from personally engaging with my Twitter followers.

    • That’s awesome Holly. Would love if you’d like to share in a post sometime how you as a realtor have found value in Twitter so we can share with our audience 🙂

Yea… I’m not a fan of Twitter – dislike not being able to see the link preview and know what it is (spam or legit) before reading further… and a billion updates per second.. it’s almost as bad as FB filtering the posts… FB won’t let our followers see the posts and Twitter shows too much! However, great points.

    • You should consider using List to focus on the core content and individuals you want to engage with. List solve this problem instantly and Twitter is a great way to interact with prospects. Hear you with FB but then again each Social site has it’s plus/minuses 🙂 Thanks for sharing Kristen.

As I move into a full time roll doing sales and marketing for my husband’s mortgage company, I am trying to create a much more effective strategy for the Twitter page. In the past, they’ve basically just used it to broadcast posts from Facebook but that definitely needs to change! I’m looking forward to implementing Social Quant as part of the overall strategy and can’t wait to see the results 🙂

    • Thanks Beth and we look forward to assisting you in that growth. Can’t wait to see what you do with your husband’s company on social media.

I have such a hard time with Twitter. It’s so massive, and it requires so much time. I feel like I’m always behind the eight ball.

    • Maybe try making list Jackie of those you really want to follow and interact with. Might make it easier. I like Twitter because you can jump in at anytime and start conversations. I’ve met tons of business contacts via Twitter and it’s really helped with promotions. I really think you could use it to grow your Facebook group.

  • Great article. I find it hard to keep up as well. When you follow so many people, the tweets just keep coming in so fast!

    • We agree. Large following is great for business but also becomes hard to pay attention. We recommend building list: https://www.socialquant.net/twitter-lists/

Just want to say thanks for this; always great intel from SQ. May I add that for loosely-structured companies that don’t “get” Twitter and delegate tweet duty to a single person (or worse, a handful of people ) without a solid, basic knowledge of this incredibly far-reaching SM machine, you’ll learn the hard way. I’m no expert but attempt to learn something new about Twitter every day–usually from Social Quant. TWITTER is not a good place to “dabble” with “a little knowledge.” Some mistakes are not easy to reverse.

    • Appreciate the comment, kind words and agree 100%

  • Thomas J

Thank you for the great insight! I would say my biggest problem (that I’ve actively been changing) was going overboard with the self-promotions. I think this contributed to a high churn rate where I plateaued at a follower amount and would stay stagnant as new followers would replace those that would unfollow daily. This is a big issue considering it’s difficult to track how this is happening and even more so for what reasons. I’m still figuring out why it happens, but I imagine it comes to experience dictating what trends to spot early on before it becomes an issue.

A big thing that could be added to this is the use of appropriate hashtags for the niche you’re targeting. I’ve seen huge increases in interactions by using the appropriate hashtags within a tweet and not cramming them in at the end. Again, thank you for taking the time to offer some excellent advice!

    • Thanks Thomas for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

One thing that can help is continuing the same pattern for 1 week or 1 month and then looking at your Twitter analytics. Then make a tweak and compare the data. Engagement, follower growth and everything is inside your analytics and I love the data. https://www.socialquant.net/how-to-use-twitter-analytics/

The biggest Twitter mistake that Social Quant staff make is following someone on Twitter to get a courtesy follow. And then a short time later, they unfollow. To me, that’s why I stopped following anyone from Social Quant.

  • John O. Akinlabi

Sweet and on-point. I never realized how badly author posting could be of any adverse effect, but now it’s clear enough

  • Am just starting to devote more time to Twitter. Your guidance is precious. Not just for beginners. Thanks a lot.

  • claireify

Always conveying this to clients but they tend not to see the value of value and they are impatient. Looking for automatic boost in sales after a month on Twitter. Geeesh

    • Marathon and not a sprint right? Not easy, but when you get the one’s who see the value….it’s a winner 🙂 Good Luck!!!!

  • Hi, Sheena, this is a great article. You’ve said many things that had been in my mind for sometime. I haven’t purchased a single twitter follower. They are all what I have earned by engaging. i don’t care fb either. They never think of their fans– They see only one side — THEIR SIDE. Thank you again for such a timely article. Have a great week ahead.

  • These are great points Sheena! There is some content such as the promotional items which I have automatically posting everywhere, But I also need to add other content and interact with others in addition to this! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

    • Thanks for checking this out and great looking website by the way. Hope BabyGoat is ROCKING 🙂

  • Good job Sheena, Excellent information written you in Post. thanks

  • Hey sheena, you have done a great job and provided valuable insights and suggestions.

  • Thanks for advising us a relevant way to get more followers and increase engagement with them.

  • Far North

We’ve all met people who talk about themselves and don’t ask about how your’re doing….don’t be one of those people 🙂

“Since we started using Social Quant on our Twitter profile, our follower count has skyrocketed 40% in 40 days!! And most importantly, engagement on our tweets has risen by the same amount — which means Social Quant is finding exactly the right followers for our brand.”
