Hey there friendly business owner or entrepreneur. I know you’re busy, so I’ll cut right to the chase.
This post is about a Twitter “hack” to use the platform as an amplifier for your content marketing.
Simply put, you want people to see your awesome content that provides value and builds trust. Once you drive traffic, the goal is to activate it into leads and, ultimately, customers. It really is that simple.
In fact, that’s the exact reason Gary Vaynerchuk said in his book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook, “Twitter is a marketer’s dream come true – because it allows you to initiate a relationship with your customer.”
There are a million and one blog posts out there on how to “do” Twitter the right way. I won’t rehash those here. This post is strictly about how to drive traffic with Twitter by growing your following.
But you need more than numbers. You need targeted followers who care about your content and ultimately your business offering.
So, how do grow your Twitter following with the right connections?
Use the Follow-First Hack to Grow Your Twitter Following
Even though I don’t see many people talk about it, a follow-first strategy is the most effective way to grow a targeted Twitter following fast. It’s no secret that following is reciprocal on Twitter.
Maybe it’s even a stretch to call this a Twitter followers “hack.” But since it’s basically free and hardly anybody talks about it, why not?
In case you’re not aware, a follow-first method simply means you find accounts you believe will get value from your content (potential customers) and follow them – you guessed it – first.
If they follow back, awesome. If they don’t, unfollow. Now, repeat the process.
Again, I don’t see this strategy talked about very much. Google “how to get more Twitter followers” and you’ll find a laundry list of advice. You’ll find tips like:
Mention and reply to users
Write guest posts
Tweet at the right times
Cross promote Twitter on other social networks
Put a link to your Twitter profile in your email signature (seriously?!)
I’m not saying those things won’t work or it’s necessarily bad advice. But all those things put together won’t come close to the effectiveness of simply following first.
The truth is, this is how so many social media experts and influencers have built their Twitter following. Again, they won’t talk about it much but believe me, it’s pretty standard.
Does a Follow-First Strategy Lead to Quality Followers?
Yes! Just in case you’re thinking that these followers won’t be paying attention to your content, think again. Allow me to use Social Quant as an example.
We’ve built our following largely on the follow-first strategy – in fact, this Twitter followers hack is our tool’s only function.
Of course, we also gain Twitter followers organically by tweeting a lot of great content and all the Twitter tips the other guys will tell you about. But the follow-first method is at the core of our growth.
And guess what? Twitter is our number one traffic driver!
That said, it’s an absolute must that you optimize your Twitter profile. Most importantly, you need a compelling pinned tweet with a strong call to action. Why? The first thing 9 out of 10 people will do after receiving a notification that you’ve followed them is check out your profile to decide if they want to follow you back or not.
This first touch point is your only chance to make a great first impression and get a follow back, or at least a click through to your website or the content in your pinned tweet.
How Do You Find Accounts to Follow First?
In truth, it’s easy to find the right people to follow on Twitter. They tell you who they are with the content they Tweet and the information in their bio.
Listen for people who are tweeting words, phrases or hashtags related to your industry.
For example, we help small business owners grow their business by growing their Twitter following. So, it makes perfect sense for us to listen for people tweeting the word and hashtag “#smallbiz.” That’s our target audience. If you tweet about that, you’re someone we’re likely to follow.
With a quick Twitter search I found the examples below. They all tweeted #smallbiz in the last 10 minutes and they’re perfect for us!
Also, search for people engaging with (tweeting to, replying to, tagging, retweeting, etc.) other accounts. You want to find accounts that their followers are likely to be interested in your business.
For instance, we look for people engaging with accounts like Gary Vaynerchuk or Entrepreneur magazine. Those people are our target audience and we want to connect with them.
How to Save Time Implementing a Follow First Strategy
You can use Twitter’s search function to find these accounts, but using a tool is much easier.
Here at Social Quant, our “set it and forget it” tool grows your following based on keywords people actively tweet.
And we are just about to release a new tool, SQManage. It allows you to manage the process yourself, but with the help of our big data algorithm. Here’s a quick preview of SQ Manage:
Here’s a quick look at the result that come up from an account search of the keyword “Entrepreneur” using the beta version of SQ Manage:
But, whether you use one of our tools or not, growing your Twitter following is a no-brainer. Social Quant’s “set it and forget it” service grows your following all the time. But even with SQManage, you can grow your account every day in just 15 minutes or less by following the right accounts.
Stay Focused on Your Goal
Now that you know how to quickly grow a targeted following, don’t lose sight of why it’s important.
Marketing is about getting leads and making sales. Sometimes that gets lost in the murky waters of social media marketing. There’s plenty of tips to be “authentic” and get people to “know, like and trust” you.
It’s great advice, and I completely agree, but never forget the overarching WHY.
You want to drive traffic to your website and activating it into leads and customers. Everything you do on Twitter can and should trace back to this singular goal.
Sometimes it’s a winding path, but never lose sight of the goal.
I’d argue even tweeting inspirational quotes or messages is a means to the end of driving and activating traffic.
Inspirational tweets allow people to get to know and like you, which makes them more likely to click when you tweet a link to your content. (Your awesome content brings the trust factor.)
Also, people like being inspired. And, even more so, people like to inspire others. You typically see better than average retweets on inspirational messages. That’s great for you because you get exposure to non-followers who often come check out your Twitter profile – which you’ve (hopefully) set up with a great pinned tweet that drives traffic!
So what do you think? Are you seeing the awesomeness of the follow-first method to grow your Twitter account?
It’s so simple, yet so, so powerful! Now all that’s left is to get out there and start following your future tribe. Happy following!
