This isn’t working. social media for business success

This is stupid.

I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing.

When it comes to social media for business, have you ever felt this way?

As a business owner, everyone tells you that you’ve got to be on the social channels if you want to have a chance at success.

So you opened an account.

You shared a few status updates with some of your best content.

And then crickets.

Next you tried a few more posts. This time with pictures, because you heard they dramatically increase engagement.

And still. Crickets.

No one seems to be getting social with you on social media. And that’s no bueno.

It’s a frustration far too many business owners experience. As a result, they continue along posting in obscurity. Others just quit. Disappointing outcomes in both instances.

Here’s the deal: Social media for business can totally work for you. But you’ve got to know how to work it.

So to ease your frustration, and light your path to social media rockstar, here are three proven ways to rock social media for your business.

1. Start chatting

If you want to get your audience to start interacting with you online, create an event. But not just any event.

Host one that’s designed for people to chat with each other (and you). Specifically, consider hosting a Twitter chat.

Here’s what Nicole Miller of Buffer had to say about these popular events:

“A Twitter chat is where a group of Twitter users meet at a pre-determined time to discuss a certain topic, using a designated hashtag (#) for each tweet contributed. A host or moderator will pose questions (designated with Q1, Q2…) to prompt responses from participants (using A1, A2…) and encourage interaction among the group. Chats typically last an hour.

Imagine a business networking event – but without a dress code and with a keyboard instead of a bar.”

Like with offline events, hosting online chats is a great way to establish your leadership in a specific area.

Twitter Chats in action:

Since April 2009, Small Biz Lady Melinda Emerson has been hosting Twitter chats. Every Wednesday evening from 8-9pm EST, Melinda hosts #Smallbizchat.

In this action packed hour, Melinda interviews a small business expert. Participants are able to see the guests responses in real time, and can chime in with their input as well.

To get extra mileage out of the valuable content from the chat, a full recap of the Q&A is posted to Melinda’s blog the following day.

As an added bonus, there’s time designated at the end of each chat for participants to share what their business does.

How to get started with Twitter chats:

Pick a topic that interests your audience. Next, figure out a format for your show, whether it’s an interview, or just a group chat.

Then pick a time, and frequency to have the chats. Promote the chat to your audience, and others you think may want to participate.

2. Start a challenge

Another way to get social while establishing your leadership on the web is to start a challenge.

Encourage your audience, or those you want to be in your audience to get involved in a particular task. Then guide them step-by-step with actions that propel them toward that common goal.

Audience challenges in action:

Absolute Yoga Academy does a fabulous job of engaging their audience through challenges on Instagram.

Recently, they created a 10-day Hollow Back challenge. Each day, they gave instruction with a brief video on how to do an asana on the road to a hollow back.

Each day participants can win prizes for sending in photos of themselves doing the asana for the day.

Everyone wins with these challenges.

Absolute Yoga Academy gets to lead and engage with their audience. The followers get steps closer to their goal. And some of them win cool prizes along the way.

How to get started with challenges:

Pick a common goal your audience is working or would like to work toward. Then establish a clear time frame for the duration of the event.

For each day of your challenge, develop an action step your audience should complete to move them closer to achieving the goal.

3. Make your audience the star

Another great way to connect with your audience is to take the focus off of you, and featuring them instead. Showcase cool things they’re doing. Share relevant photos, videos, and other information about them.

Not only does it allow you to shout out your audience, but it gives them a buzz by getting highlighted by someone they follow. It’s also a great incentive for them to share with their friends and followers.

Making your audience the star in action:

The Nomadness Travel Tribe is a group of over 8,000 travelers. Collectively, they’ve visited every country in the world.

When members take a vacation, they are invited to share photos of their trip within the private Nomadness Facebook group.

Each day, Nomadness publishes cool photos from members’ trips on their various social channels.

How to get started featuring your audience:

Choose an activity that’s easy to rally your audience around. Then invite them to share their stories with you, either through photos, videos, or even through the written word.

Be sure to clearly explain the rules, and how you’ll use the information along the way.

Then set-up a communication stream to share your audiences stories on social media. Tag those you’ve featured so they can feel the love.

It’s time for you to rock and start using social media for business

Your audience wants to get social with you. You just have to create the right environment for them to do so.

You don’t have to continue toiling away in frustration and obscurity with social media.

So pick one of the ideas above, and experiment with it. Play with variations from the examples. And don’t be afraid to put your own spin on it.

Get focused with your efforts. Do some upfront planning. Then go for it.

You can do this.
