Lists are one of the most valuable tools Twitter has to offer. Ideal for cutting the clutter in the newsfeed and finding great content to share, for organizing your prospects and customers so you can easily engage, and for getting new ideas for creating your own content.

Bottom line, you definitely want to take advantage of Twitter lists.

But what if you don’t know how to make a list on Twitter? Where do you get started?

Check out this step-by-step guide on how to make a list on Twitter (and how to save time by subscribing to other people’s lists).

1. Login to your Twitter account and click on your profile picture on the top left to access the drop down.

The drop down isn’t the only place to access lists however. You can also see all of your lists, and create new ones, directly from your profile.

2. Once you click on the Lists link, you’ll be able to access all of your lists. This link defaults to lists that you have created yourself as well as those you have subscribed to. However, you can also access any lists you have been placed on, as well, by toggling back and forth between “Subscribed to” and “Member of.”

3. The Create New List button is located in the right hand column.

4. Once you click the button, a light box will appear, allowing you to name the list, provide an optional description and select whether you want the list public or private.

Making Twitter Lists

If you have created a list of leads or prospects or even a list of customers, you will likely want to keep your list private. However, if you’re creating lists of great content producers, speakers at an event, or employees in your own company, you may want to consider leaving the list public so others can see and access it. It allows you to be a great resource for other people. Also keep in mind that anyone on those lists will be notified that you have added them, so it’s a great way to flatter influencers with whom you want to develop a stronger relationship.

5. To add someone to a list, simply go to their profile page and click on the gear to access the drop down menu. Be aware you don’t need to follow someone to add them to a list, you can add anyone you’d like.

6. From there, simply click ‘Add or remove from lists…” and select the check box for any and all lists you want to add that person to.

7. To subscribe to someone else’s lists, you can easily go to their profile and click on the Lists link under their header image.

8. From there, select the list you want to subscribe to. You’ll see a list of all the most recent tweets from the members on that list. Out to the left, you’ll see the name of the list, members, subscribers, and a Subscribe button.

9. You can unsubscribe from the list the exact same way.

So why would you want to subscribe to lists? Well, for starters, creating lists takes time and if it’s a large list it can take a REALLY long time. In many cases, however, you will find that many of the lists you’re interested in creating are already created, so subscribing to someone else’s Twitter list can be a huge time saver.

On a side note, if you’re looking for someone with great lists to subscribe to, check out Peg Fitzpatrick’s Twitter account. She is a great social media marketer, a bestselling author and (clearly) has a great sense of humor.

Final Thoughts

I think for many of us Twitter lists become one of those things we create with the INTENTION of using, but then forget about over time. But they truly can be extremely beneficial to your business, so take advantage of them!

So now you know how to make a list on Twitter. Have you created your own lists or subscribed to any? If yes, who have you subscribed to?

I would have liked to share this article on G+, however I keep having to chase the box down down to the bottom of the post & still unable to click the “SHARE” ~ too frustrating.

    • Thanks for wanting to share and I agree that is frustrating.

The share tool is awesome, but Google Plus doesn’t support the tool correctly. Happens on all blogs. Only ay around it is minimizing the resolution of the screen (Control – on a Mac) or sharing the link on plus itself. Wish they’d fix this. Thanks though for reading this post and visiting Social Quant 🙂
