3 Ways You Can Promote Your Own Business While Live Tweeting Events

I’m excited that I’m going to be headed to Chicago in a couple weeks to attend Kim Garst’s Social Boom! conference.

I attended last year in Tampa and it was a great event Live Tweetingwith lots of great speakers.

One thing that will definitely be happening this year is lots of live tweeting!

Live tweeting is essentially that…tweeting live, in-the-moment updates as the event unfolds, allowing you to share key nuggets of information with your audience.

These tweets are different than your normal updates, especially if you use SocialOomph like I do, as they use a custom hashtag specifically designated for the event so people can easily follow.

Live tweeting is a great way to grow your audience since people at the event, as well as those unable to attend, will be monitoring the hashtag.

It also presents a great opportunity to demonstrate your own influence.

Read this article to learn three ways you can use live tweeting as a way to promote your own business the next time you’re at or watching an event.

1. Drive traffic to your own site.

Now, before I go any further, I just need to say that it’s NOT okay to start spamming a hashtag with your own links or, for that matter, utilizing the hashtag to push your own agenda.

This approach will very quickly turn people off of you and your brand. That said, there are still some great ways you can live tweet to drive traffic back to your site:

Update your bio and include a link.

Make sure that the messaging in your Twitter bio is in alignment with the event, that you include the event hashtag and that you have a link pointing back to your website.

Ideally you should have a link pointing to a free download that is related to the event or on a related topic.

Provide something of value that attendees or anyone searching the hashtag would be interested in. This way as you are live tweeting from the event and people want to learn more about who you are they will not only read your updated bio but will also be more likely to join your email list.

Create a free download related to the event.

If you don’t have something already, create a checklist or article that will provide additional value for event attendees. You could even compile all of your notes at the end of the event for people who couldn’t attend (and even those who were able to be there).

Tweet a link to the download along with an eye-catching image and pin them to the top of your Twitter profile so they can be easily located.

Create a blog post about the event.

If you are focused strictly on increasing traffic and the reach of your content, try creating a blog post with information from the event.

For example, you could create a blog with your top takeaways after each day of the event and then tweet it out at night along with the hashtag.

Not only would this allow you to drive people interested in the event to your website, but it would also allow you to provide your own input, highlighting your own expertise.

2. Highlight your own products and services.

You have to be really careful when doing this not to just post links to your products and services using the hashtag.  Instead, try to carefully craft content that provides value to attendees while still highlighting your own products and services.

For example, if you are a brand strategist or even social media manager, a beautiful or creative infographic highlighting information from a speaker’s presentation could be a great way to share valuable information while also showing what great work you do.

3. Highlight your own expertise.

The best way to stand out from the rest of the live tweeters AND help your own brand is to use the quotes from speakers to create branded images for Twitter. It’s best to have these templates set up in advance (I recommend Canva) and just type in the quote as it happens, tweeting it on the spot.

If you’re concerned using a desktop application might be too time consuming for live tweeting, try using a phone app like WordSwag or Typography. Add your logo or at the very least text with your website to the bottom of the image.

Final Thoughts

Live tweeting is a lot of work, especially if you are trying to tweet a lot of the content being shared by speakers.

If you’re just an attendee and not being paid to live tweet, I would make sure to do some live tweeting but also take time to sit back and absorb the information that’s being shared. You don’t want to spend so much time tweeting and engaging with your audience that you miss out.

I do highly recommend at the end of each day or the end of the conference that you create a blog with a list of takeaways and tweet it using the hashtag. This will allow you to highlight your expertise, provide value and obtain nice traffic back to your website.
